Dance contact improvisation with us at Oxford Contact Dance

In this class - suitable for beginners and experienced dancers - we'll have a two hour class studiyng and research movement together, building a repertoire of movement and improvisation practice which forms the core of contact improvisation. The theme of this class is: less touch, more contact!

Please do not attend if you have any symptoms of Covid-19. Thank-you.

Bring a water bottle and wear loose clothing in which you can move freely. Note: these sessions are for adults (18+ years).

This is our maxim: All life a dance; everyone a dancer; every moment a dance

All sales are online (right up to the start of the session).

Booking Link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/beginners...

Contact improvisation is a dance which emerged in the 1970’s and which has now spread throughout the world. It’s often taught in university dance courses but it’s easy to learn and fun. It’s an improvised dance – a dialogue in movement – which has a fluid and dynamic form.

We welcome musicians and anyone who wants to accompany the session with music. Just bring your instrument and improvise with the dancing.

Location

We're using Upper hall of the Jericho Community Centre which has a sprung wooden floor.

Eternity 123 is the third installment of a feminist dance triptych choreographed and performed by Vangeline (Elsewhere in 2018, Erasure in 2019, and now Eternity 123).

Eternity 123 traces the symbolic journey of women’s liberation across time. With this piece, Vangeline also celebrates the impact of women on the art form butoh, exploring the link between women, butoh, and “cabaret.”

‘In the 70s and 80s, women butoh dancers danced in “cabarets” to make a living in Tokyo”, says Vangeline. “This history has led to unique methods and contributions by women in our field–contributions that have typically been overlooked. In the 1990s, I also made a living in New York as a go go/burlesque/vaudeville dancer. In this piece, I celebrate women trailblazers while playfully exploring these layers of history.”

Behind all significant cultural movements and changes in history, the lives of countless women can be found, as well as countless voices that have been silenced. As we challenge our collective memory by telling their stories, we redefine the importance of women’s participation in society.

Friday, 3 March 2023 to Saturday, 4 March 2023
Timing:
7pm
Cost:
£12-15

Every year Moving with the Times, a co-commission with Dancin' Oxford, features new work from four exciting dance companies. Expect to see Bharatnatyam dance, experimental music, drag, clowning, light displays, and hip hop fusion to tell powerful stories of identity.

This year our four featured artists/companies are Divija Melally, fuse collective, Vita Oldershaw and CTC Dance Company.

Divija Melally - @divija_melally
Divija Melally graduated from Bath Spa University, UK, with BA (Hons) Dance, and is trained in contemporary and Bharatnatyam dance. She is also a graduate of the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, Bangalore, India. She has performed with leading dance companies across Europe and in India. For her Moving With The Times commission, Divija will create a dance work based around her own experiences of intergenerational trauma.

the fuse collective - @fuse.collective
The fuse collective is an interdisciplinary collective made up of early career artists including Trinity Laban graduate and disabled dance artist Lucy Clark, visual artists Daniela Zaharieva and Yi Ting Liong, and experimental musician, Philip Kinshuck. For the Moving With The Times commission, the fuse collective plans to create an immersive, interactive piece fusing dance, art and light to communicate what it is like to live with a hidden disability.

Vita Peach - @vitapeachperformer
Oxford’s own Vita Peach is a graduate from Middlesex University (BA Dance Studies, First Class). Vita is an actor, a burlesque dancer and a drag king. For her Moving With The Times commission, Vita plans to create a humorous work drawing on techniques from contemporary dance, acrobatics, theatre, burlesque, butoh, jazz and clowning to create HUGO, a piece of movement theatre about a man who goes through a very extreme transition.

Christopher Tendai CTC Dance Company - @ctc.co
Christopher Tendai founded CTC Dance Company in 2017. Christopher started his career as a dancer on the West End and performed in many West End musicals including Hamilton, West Side Story and Cabaret. CTC Dance Company creates innovative dance productions on topics including mental health awareness and gender diversity. For the Moving With The Times commission, CTC Dance Company will create a piece exploring the relationship between a cis man and a trans woman.
