Sound Resource runs fun, inclusive, participatory singing sessions with adults in Oxfordshire – there are no auditions, participants don’t need experience and there’s no need to read music. Sessions are guided by experienced community singing practitioners using a wide range of musical material.

The charity currently provides regular sessions in Oxford and Banbury for anyone who enjoys singing, would like to feel their confidence grow,
believes they can't sing and wants to find their natural voice, is keen to improve their health and wellbeing, and might be living with a lung condition, dementia, social, emotional and communication difficulties. Sound Resource works in partnership with local housing associations, local community associations and other local charities such as Oxfordshire Age UK. The programme is expanding! In addition, Sound Resource mentors those wishing to progress their community singing skills, provides consultancy and is developing methods for measuring the benefits of singing for wellbeing, social benefit and reduction of isolation.

Schola Cantorum of Oxford is one of the longest established and most widely known chamber choirs in the UK. Founded by conductor László Heltay in 1960 as Collegium Musicum Oxoniense, Schola Cantorum has worked with such highly respected musicians as former patrons Sir Michael Tippett and Yehudi Menuhin, as well as Leonard Bernstein, Gustav Leonhardt, John Nelson, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Mark Elder, and Sir Neville Marriner.

Schola Cantorum comprises around thirty singers, most of whom are students at Oxford University. Studying a broad variety of subjects across the Humanities and Sciences, the choir’s members rehearse during term, and regularly perform in Oxford and across the country. The choir has developed a noteworthy international reputation, having given concerts in recent years in Argentina, Italy, Israel, Mexico, Poland, Spain, China and France. In September 2014 the choir visited the USA for the first time since 1989, touring through New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Philadelphia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia.

Schola Cantorum has enjoyed a long history of recordings. In 2008, the choir recorded music by American composer Randall Thompson on the Hyperion label, and in January 2010 added a recording of works by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. The choir has frequently appeared on UK and international radio and television, and has featured in several of John Bridcut’s recent BBC films, including Delius: Composer, Lover, Enigma; The Passions of Vaughan Williams, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death; Elgar: The man behind the mask; The Prince and the Composer, a documentary on Hubert Parry presented by HRH the Prince of Wales; and Britten's Endgame, a film to commemorate the centenary of the composer's birth, broadcast in November 2013 on BBC4. In 2014 Schola Cantorum recorded a new CD, Oculi Omnium. Recorded in the spectacular acoustic of Merton College Chapel, Oxford, the CD is a 'celebration of England's choral tradition' and features pieces by Howells, Stanford, and James Burton himself. It is due for release in March 2015.

In addition to their regular series of concerts in Oxford, recent highlights have included performances at the Dorchester Festival and in Beaulieu Abbey; the opening concert of the Fifth Masevaux International Festival of the Organ, performing with Thierry Escaich, a performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion as part of the St Denis Festival broadcast on France Télévisions in 2011, and Berlioz’ Roméo et Juliette broadcast on Radio 3 from the Royal Festival Hall in February 2012, and performed at La Theatre Champs-Elysées with Sir Mark Elder. In January 2013 the choir performed Haydn’s Creation with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Adam Fischer, and also gave a concert of Bach’s Magnificat, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Zadok the Priest in St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta, Malta.

Combing music, craft and technology; Re-resonate develop and deliver innovative participatory arts projects with adults and children in both mainstreams and specialist community settings. In inclusive and highly engaging workshops we build musical instruments, create installations, compose, perform and produce music and generally explore the creative potential of sound in order to kindle imaginations and nurture positive skills and insights. We are small community organisation led by two highly skilled practitioners: composer and music leader Ashton Mills, and Sculptor and craft leader Jonny Wild.

Re-resonate's aim is to make music tangible. We do this by approaching it from a number of angles. By combining the physical nature of making, the spacial nature of installation art and the evocativeness of storytelling to create sounds that are felt, built and seen as well as played and heard. We began as an alternative provision for a college for looked after children. Our aim was to take upcycled music beyond elastic band guitars and yoghurt pot shakers and work with tools such as drills and saws to produce instruments that would sound rather than look musical. We developed a project that engaged children in challenging circumstances and offered an immersive experience whilst working flexibly in response to their needs. The group built musical instruments from scrap and composed and recorded original music on them. We discovered the potential for quality composition using visual approaches and music technology; enabling non-musicians to create music of standard they were proud of. Building on this initial success we grew into an organisation that continued to develop and deliver innovative, bespoke projects with partners in the community and achieving a wide range of successful outcomes including : a set of semi-permanent outdoor musical instruments built with children (with South Oxford Adventure Playground,) an interactive electronic installation created with YP on the autism spectrum (with Autism Family Support ,) a carnival procession with recycled instruments (with Fusion Arts,) as well as achieving quality engagement in schools, youth clubs and other settings.

Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra
Marios Papadopoulos

Established in 1998, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra occupies a unique position within the UK orchestral landscape. Formerly known as Oxford Philomusica and hailed as ‘thoroughly impressive’ by BBC Music Magazine, its reputation is based on the uncompromising artistic standards of its founder and Music Director Marios Papadopoulos, and maintained by some of the finest musicians in the UK. As an orchestra of the highest quality, the Oxford Philharmonic attracts some of the world’s greatest artists to appear in its series at Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre, including Sir András Schiff, Valery Gergiev, Lang Lang, Maria João Pires, Renée Fleming, Pinchas Zukerman, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Nigel Kennedy.

Following his remarkable Oxford debut with the Orchestra in 2013, world renowned violinist Maxim Vengerov became its first Artist in Residence. Since then, Vengerov and the Oxford Philharmonic have undertaken tours in the UK and have recorded the violin concertos of Brahms and Sibelius – the latter gaining special permission from the Sibelius family to record the original 1904 version.

Praised as ‘a classy ensemble’ by The Mail on Sunday, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s many achievements to date include extensive annual concert seasons in Oxford, touring performances across the UK and a growing list of international engagements; acclaimed recordings of Haydn’s Creation with New College Choir, and the Handel/Mendelssohn Acis and Galatea with Christ Church Choir; major anniversary celebrations of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven; family concerts; and the annual Piano Festival and Summer Academy. The Orchestra’s acclaimed Chamber Music Series and Summer Baroque Festival showcase The Soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic – a tight-knit group of musicians described by The Times as the ensemble’s ‘glorious individual players’.

The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra has been firmly committed to outreach work from its earliest days. Its various projects focus on taking music to areas of social and economic disadvantage, including work in special schools and hospitals. In 2002, it was appointed as the University of Oxford’s first ever Orchestra in Residence. As part of its University Residency, the Oxford Philharmonic collaborates with the Faculty of Music in educational programmes for the student community, while partnerships with Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council provide tuition and performance opportunities for hundreds of talented young musicians.

The Orchestra and its Music Director were awarded the City of Oxford’s Certificate of Honour in 2013, in recognition of their contribution to education and performance in Oxford.

The continual search for excellence underpins the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s reputation, and is reflected in an orchestra that strives to create bold musical statements with every concert it presents.
