Venue, Timing and Cost

Venue:
Folk Arts Oxford, Crawley Mill near Witney
Date(s):
Wednesday, 7 February 2018 to Tuesday, 8 May 2018
Timing:
2 - 4.30pm (7 Feb) 10am - 12.30pm (8 May)
Cost:
£80 for 2.5 hr course

Makaton is a communication system using signs, symbols, and speech, and has a long history of helping children and adults with a variety of communication difficulties to interact with those around them.

If you love to sing - or if you've always wanted to try! - this could be just the course for you. We'll explore some of the basic concepts around using signs and song together to aid communication, and learn to sing and sign a few well-known songs together. You'll come away with a manual containing signs and symbols for ten nursery rhymes, and the knowledge of how to adapt the signs you know to your favourite songs.

We are limiting numbers on these courses to a maximum of SIX people - this means that our tutor is able to spend more time with each participant, making sure they feel confident with the signing. The cost includes a participant manual with signs and symbol drawings.

This is a 2.5 hour course which is completed in one session.

Booking options:
Weds 7th February -- 2-4.30pm. Cost: £80
Tues 8th May -- 10am-12.30pm. Cost: £80

Please click 'Get Tickets' and select the option you would like. https://fao.yapsody.com

If you'd like to hear about other events from Folk Arts Oxford (including Folk Weekend: Oxford), please leave the box selected for 'Allow the promoter to contact me' when you check out.

Why is a folk music organisation teaching Makaton?!
Folk Arts Oxford believe the arts should be accessible for everyone, and are very proud to host the first Makaton-friendly festival in the UK. We are holding these workshops as part of our commitment to improving access to our events for people with disabilities.

Kim Lowings & The Greenwood

Inspired by the folk tradition, Kim Lowings and The Greenwood perform their songs with a contemporary twist. Their live shows are an energetic blend of original compositions and traditional songs. Kim Lowings, Andrew Lowings, Tim Rogers and Dave Sutherland bring together their multi-instrumental skill and individual experience resulting in an innovative and sensitive approach to arrangements. The motivation is to keep the tradition alive and to share their own tales.

The group began as a collective in 2011 with Kim and her Dad, Andrew, collaborating with Midlands musicians. Since then the Greenwood has become an established four-piece on the British folk scene. Their recorded work includes their debut album This Life (2012), EP Deepest, Darkest Night (2013) and their latest album Historia (2015) heralded as "beautiful and enchanting” by Living Tradition and "Absolutely captivating” R2 Magazine ★★★★

Brahms German Requiem

This is one definitely NOT TO BE MISSED.

Brahms’s magnificent, noble “German Requiem” always draws a crowd. Its sublime, radiant solos and majestic, dramatic choruses have, for almost 150 years moved and delighted audiences. That alone is reason enough to get along to a performance.

Add to this: the united voices of around 100 singers, many known personally to you; first class soloists - the wonderful Ann Mackay and stupendous Steven Henderson - known for their splendid renditions of the work; and an orchestral ensemble drawn from far and wide. Then you’ll realise that a “perfect storm” of elements is coming together for a very special event. Great Milton & Wheatley Singers and Cumnor Choral Society are joining forces for this unique occasion, and putting their hearts and souls into making sure all the hard work counts.

As well as the Brahms, you’ll hear readings and poetry, specifically chosen to honour “Remembrance”, and spellbinding, moving solos, specifically selected for the evening.

So REMEMBER!

On Saturday November 11th, set a recording for “Strictly” and head for St Mary’s, Thame at 7.30pm (better make it 7.00pm - you’ll want a good seat). Then sit back and let the balm, angst and glorious waves of beautiful melody and sumptuous harmony wash over you, knowing that you’re also supporting the “Southampton University Centre for Cancer Immunology Research” and Oxford-based children’s charity “Parasol”.
