The Bingo Bongo Spoken Word Cabaret feat. EVIS MCGONAGALL & THE ANTIPOET & EMILY HARRISON

The Bingo Bongo Spoken Word Cabaret brings you the most eclectic, electric and original spoken word cabaret to be found in town. We scour the country for artists that inspire and delight us; the ones we would happily travel 500 miles to see, and bring them all together for one sumptuous rib-tickling, fist-punching, booty-shaking night at Oxford’s illustrious indie music venue, The Jericho Tavern.

Hosted by poetry power couple, the inimitable ‘completely spell-binding’ Tina Sederholm, and the ‘cause for concern’ that is Neil Spokes, this November we present for your delectation, three extraordinary guests...

Elvis McGonagall
Standup poet, armchair revolutionary and World Slam Champion.
Elvis has appeared on The One Show, The Culture Show and many other tv shows with the word ‘show’ in the title. A Radio 4 regular on Saturday Live, The Wondermentalist Cabaret and Arthur Smith’s Balham Bash, he even has his own Radio 4 sitcom, Elvis McGonagall takes a look on the Bright Side. Performing everywhere from the Edinburgh Fringe to The Glamour Bar in Shanghai, he is one the most prolific and well-known spoken word performers country today.
His new collection Viva Loch Lomond! collects together the greatest hits of an acclaimed performance career, covering everything from Scottish independence to William Wallace’s taste for cheese.

The Antipoet
Comedy hits poetry over the head with a double bass, a triangle and lashings of guyliner.
This comedic beat poetry duo are one of the most original acts on the circuit, these masters of mayhem have delighting and alarming audiences at festivals and clubs for the last ten years. A wry blend of anarchocynisism and comic observation, they never fail to get the crowd on their feet.

Emily Harrison
Medicated feminist poet. Sexually confident, socially awkward. Voted Best Spoken Word Performer 2016 at The Saboteur Awards, Emily performs regularly in London and across the UK, combining precise writing and bold performance. Astute and at times painfully humorous, her first full-length collection with Burning Eye Books confronts a search for love against the stark yet humanising backdrop of the psychiatric institution.

Supported by Apples and Snakes, ‘England’s leading performance poetry organisation’ www.applesandsnakes.org

P.S. There may or may not be poetry bingo. I know. We spoil you.

The musical achievements and professional experiences of the band combined is too long to list and spans 40+ years, you couldn’t find folk who know more about folk.

The line-up for tonight is PJ Wright, Sally Barker, Anna Ryder and Mat Davies.

The Listening Room presents: Jess Hall + Anne-Marie Sanderson

Submitted by Listeningroom on October 16, 2017 - 21:56

Venue, Timing and Cost

Venue:
The Old Fire Station
Date(s):
Saturday, 4 November 2017
Timing:
8.00pm-10.30pm
Cost:
£7.00

Welcome to the Listening Room! Some of the best local emerging bands/artists are hand-picked every season for a night of indie, folk-y music

Join us on Saturday 4th November:

Jess Hall grew up near the coastline of North Devon and started writing songs about the quirks of love and life just before moving to the starkly landlocked Oxford eight years ago. Since that time she has established herself on the local scene with her simple stunning clarity of voice and images of coastal love and loss.

Jess will be accompanied on the night by Barney Morse-Brown (also known as Duotone), cellist with multi-platinum artist Birdy, BBC Folk Award winners the Imagined Village, Chris Wood and Jackie Oates.

"Jess Hall's voice - limpid and elegant, as pure as clear cut crystal, variously playful, pretty and almost hymnal - as wonderous and natural as the Devon beaches that provide so much of her musical inspiration." - Nightshift

Anne-Marie Sanderson's voice is evocative of birds in flight - soaring, gliding, swooping - and it finds its home among the tall trees of her deft guitar work. Describing Sanderson's distinctive indie-folk music in these terms is apt; she is an artist who casts a careful eye and attentive ear to the natural environment, alternating between wide-eyed wonder and wry observation. As well as drawing from a host of musical influences, some of Sanderson's songs pay homage to literary greats, and she is currently recording a collection of songs inspired by authors including Robert Macfarlane, Barbara Kingsolver, and Doris Lessing.
