What happens when everything about you gets tarnished with a single brush and your story becomes one of many…

A variation of AKDC’s critically-acclaimed production ONE, this new piece uses high energy Kathak featuring the cyclic phenomenon of south Asian classical arts and philosophy – where there is no beginning or end, incorporating Nritta (pure dance) and Nritya (expression of narrative), to capture the first beat of that cyclic time and nest it until it becomes the ‘one’ again – to tell the experiences of migrants maligned with generalisation and stereotype.

Three dancers weave individual stories accompanied by live music featuring tabla and cello.

We are an arts education charity providing a warm, friendly environment in a purpose-built building for children and adults to enjoy the arts in South Oxfordshire.

It is our wish that creative education, presented in a friendly and approachable way, should underpin all our children’s courses. Our biggest offering and one key to our success - our Yamaha Music School - is a fantastic example of this.

The three core principles of the Yamaha Music Education System are:
* Comprehensive music education: Including listening, singing, playing the piano and keyboard, theory, creativity
* Timely education: Courses are specially designed to be developmentally appropriate for each age group
* Group learning: Learning in a group - from beginner through to advanced levels - is key to the success of the courses: interacting with and learning from peers, absorbing the musical atmosphere, collaboration and sociability

Classes are held in term times only. New courses start twice a year: in April and November.

We also have art lessons, dance classes, individual music tuition on several instruments, fitness sessions, an adult community choir, and our 'MUSIC AT MATRIX concert series'.

We look forward to meeting your family!

Gesture: a three-day investigation
Visual arts – Music – Dance – Literature – Film
25–27 January 2024
Auditorium, Garden Quad

This conference aims to take the term ‘gesture’ to task – asking what it means across art forms to make, trace, think, or perform gestures. Notions of the ‘gestural’ are at the heart of expression, but the assumptions on which the agency of the gesture is based are often overlooked. Arguably, the gesture or gestural sits at a strange intersection between the material and immaterial. As such, it is open to historical, philosophical, aesthetic, affective, and descriptive interrogation. The conference focuses on work that deliberately deals across aesthetic and material forms, unpacking and investigating the contingencies and commitments of gesture.

For the full schedule please visit: https://www.gestureconference.com/schedule.

This conference is in conjunction with an exhibition of work by Mark Rowan-Hull, at St John’s College, Oxford, and will feature a performance by the artist as part of the conference.

The conference is convened by Dr Jennifer Johnson, Mark Rowan-Hull, Dr Rachel Coombes and Dr Tim Coombes.
