Uusikuu (New Moon) bow admiringly to the traditional Nordic dance music of the 1930s to 1960s. The band calls their style “Vintage Sounds of Finland”. The small orchestra tours Europe, and together they show that Finns not only invented tango, but also master the wild Humpaa, that they love the dreamy waltzes as much as the sophisticated swing. World music elements, jazz influences and Laura Ryhӓnen’s sometimes cheeky, sometimes ironic stories make the evening a roller coaster ride of emotions.

‘Wonderful and mysterious. Like a soundtrack to an Aki Kaurismäki film.’ -Folker

‘Finnisch tango fire with passion and humour.’ –General-Anzeiger Bonn

‘The passionate world of old Finnish dance music.’ -BBC Radio

‘Like a live gramophone on a glorious midsummer eve.’ -WDR Radio

Uusikuu and Justice in Motion collaborated in 2017, inspired by the centenary of Finland’s independence, to create “KAIHO // the state in between”. Contemporary music and live vintage tango music combined beautifully to explore boundaries and tell poignant stories about moving across borders. The original line-up that appeared in KAIHO will be performing.

Laura Ryhänen, vocals

Mikko Kuisma, violin & vocals

Norbert Bremes, accordion

Jari Matti Riiheläinen, bass

Uusikuu won the German Rock & Pop Award 2023: Best World Music Album for ‘Karuselli’

This concert is part of Justice in Motion’s Anniversary Exhibition in the Galleries from 20th February – 30th March. ‘10 Years in Motion’ features the ten productions created by the company in the last decade. Props, costumes, sections of theatre set, photographs, videos, music and soundscapes bring their history to life. Come behind the scenes to explore the objects, the environments and space with all your senses.

What is Carbon Literacy Training?

Carbon Literacy Training equips learners with the knowledge, skills, motivation and confidence to embed positive climate action in your work and personal lives. Our course is catered to Oxfordshire’s creative community, helping learners to measurably reduce the carbon cost of creative projects and creating a cultural shift towards climate justice and a zero-carbon future.

Is this course right for me?

Our course has been designed for independent creatives, freelancers, artists, writers, performers, members of community groups and staff and volunteers from cultural organisations and venues.

This session has been funded by the Vale of White Horse District Council Climate Action fund, so is open to anyone based in the Vale of White Horse area in Oxfordshire.

To access this training, please join the network (for free) by signing the Green Arts Charter.

Spaces are limited. Please let us know if you can no longer attend, so that we can offer the space to someone else.

Who are we?

Green Arts Oxfordshire Network (GAON) exists to unite Oxfordshire’s artists and cultural organisations in their work to tackle the climate & ecological emergency. We believe that a better future is possible, and that we as cultural leaders need to create the change we want to see in the world.

What's the format of Carbon Literacy Training?

Our training is a full day of learning made up of 3 parts:

Part 1: Online e-learning Platform

This section increases your understanding of the science behind climate change, and the global and local impacts. It is self-directed, including videos and quizzes, and is completed online in your own time ahead of part 2. We expect this to take around 2 - 3 hours.

Part 2: Online Training Session with a Carbon Literacy Trainer

This section outlines what we need to do as a society to reduce carbon emissions, introducing national plans, local initiatives and high impact actions that you can take, in the context of the creative sector. This is an interactive session including group discussions and opportunities to ask questions. The session will last 3.5 - 4 hours inclusive of a 30-minute break.

Part 3: Participant Details Forms

The final part of the training involves you developing an action pledge both as an individual and with a wider group, in order to reduce carbon emissions. This section should take around 1 hour to complete.

Accessibility

If you have any access requirements, please let us know when you book your training session. We have live transcriptions available to support learners during our training sessions. This is available to request anonymously before the session through our short pre-course questionnaire.

What's the impact?

The sustainability consultancy firm Jacobs did a study on the effectiveness of Carbon Literacy training, and discovered that there is between a 5 - 15% carbon saving per person for those that undertake the training. A study at the University of Leeds also found that Carbon Literacy is an effective way of instigating lasting change.

Testimonials from GAON Carbon Literacy Training Participants

“The trainer was very passionate and inspirational. The training has really opened my eyes to what changes I can make as an individual and artistic director of a small charity. Thank you and please keep up the great work!”

“Thank you Green Arts Oxfordshire for providing such a thorough, well-informed, accessible training! I feel the training helped us gather more accurate info about our carbon footprint, and gave a lot of useful insights on how to reduce it. Everyone should take this course!”

“This is a very informative and helpful introduction for anyone in our times.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the training. I learnt a lot and it helped me clarify what direction I should take next in my commitment to doing something about climate change. It left me feeling positive, which is something I rarely feel when our future can appear overwhelmingly disastrous.”

* This session may be postponed if we do not secure 15 bookings.

Fay Hield

Fay is a singer whose choice of material and the delivery of it reflect a rare sensitivity and appreciation of the tradition whilst remaining naturalistic and highly distinctive. Fay’s albums are released by prestigious folk label Topic Records, winning many accolades as well as a nomination for the Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
In 2011, Fay brought together The Full English, seven of England’s top interpreters of traditional song, to transfer archival material from the newly launched digital archive of the English Folk Dance & Song Society to the stage. This groundbreaking project won two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for best Group and Best Album, as well as the heart of audiences.
Equally happy solo with her banjo or with a thirteen strong multi art-form theatrical cast, Fay reaches out to the audience and communicates. The strength of Fay’s material lies in the structure of the song and her storytelling – in whatever format she performs the heart of the song is delivered.
Bringing new arrangements to old songs, Fay continues in her exploration of the incredible repertoire that is the English tradition pushing at the boundaries of our engagement with music.

The intimate surroundings of Exeter College Chapel will be the ideal setting for a varied programme of choral music: Celestial Harmonies.

We include a recently composed setting of the Requiem Mass by the young British composer Kerensa Briggs. Her setting of the Requiem Mass for choir, soprano soloist and organ brings “her own colours to the gently assuaging tradition of Duruflé and Fauré“. The piece recently received its first recording and we think this is the first Oxford performance.

The other main work in our programme is Thomas Tallis’s monumental setting of ‘Gaude gloriosa Mater Dei’ (Rejoice O glorious Mother of God). It’s a long piece in eight contrasting musical sections and was probably written in the 1550s during the reign of the catholic Queen Mary Tudor. Tallis uses varied combinations of voices for the different sections, and the piece builds slowly to a powerful conclusion.

Both the main works above are based on plainsong, and we also include Maurice Duruflé’s four motets based on Gregorian themes (1960). Duruflé uses the ancient melodies to build a magical sound world in these brief pieces, as he had done 10 years earlier in his own setting of the Requiem mass.

Full Programme:

Kerensa Briggs
Requiem

Thomas Tallis
Gaude Gloriosa Mater Dei

Maurice Duruflé
Four motets based on Gregorian themes:
- Ubi caritas et amor
- Tota pulchra es Maria
- Tu es Petrus
- Tantum ergo

At the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, following the English Civil War, the recreated Chapel Royal became once again one of the greatest choirs in Europe. Its finest composers were Henry Purcell and John Blow, both trained as choristers in the Chapel and then appointed as its organists. Both of them also wrote Latin motets, probably composed for the Catholic Chapel of Queen Catherine of Braganza at St James’ Palace. Contrapunctus presents some of their sacred masterworks, including Purcell’s famous music for the funeral of King Charles II.

I was glad (Henry Purcell)
Funeral Sentences (Purcell)
Beati omnes (Purcell)
How doth the city sit solitary (Matthew Locke)

Interval

Salvator mundi (John Blow)

Steve Martland Hits the Club

An iconoclastic composer, Steve Martland's mission was to engage with people outside of the classical concert hall. With his band of saxophones, brass, guitars and drums he brought music to people in clubs, local arts centres and other less conventional venues.
This project is to support the revival of Martland’s genre-crossing music, commission new works inspired by his approach and put them in front of local audiences who may be unfamiliar with contemporary classical music.

The project is in collaboration with the Komuna Collective – a group of young artists, musicians, DJs, and composers committed to an interdisciplinary approach to the arts – and sees Martland’s compositions for string quartet and the Steve Martland Band played in bars and clubs in Oxford and London alongside newly commissioned works. Further inspiration, however, is taken from Martland being the only composer signed to the now legendary Factory Records. With them he performed alongside DJs at infamous Haçienda nightclub and released albums under their ‘Factory Classical’ imprint. Factory’s aim here resonated with Martland’s in that it sought to cross boundaries, this time in marketing classical music to their regular post-punk/alternative audience. Inspired by this experimental approach our concerts will see local DJs work in and around the classical works performed.
