“The women in this book represent all ordinary women, just like you and me, who are walking the streets of Oxford today.”

Philippa James’ ‘100 Women of Oxford’ consists of one hundred portraits of women who live in Oxford, each situated within the intimate spaces of their own home. Each portrait is accompanied by text, edited by Philippa after spending 1-2 hours getting to know each of the one hundred women.

In celebration of International Women’s Day (8 March) and Women’s History Month, the Museum of Oxford has invited Philippa to talk about the project for our March Lunchtime Talk. She will share her personal reasons for reaching out to 100 strangers; how she made connections through vulnerability and courage; and provide real insight into the joys and difficulties of producing such a large body of work.

Philippa will also discuss the diversity of women walking past us on the streets of Oxford, and how this ‘city of dreaming spires’ is more complex than it appears from the outside world.

‘100 Women of Oxford’ was first exhibited at Tap Social Movement on International Women’s Day 2020, just before the first COVID-19 lockdown, and later at The North Wall. ‘100 Women of Oxford’ was published as a book in 2022 by The North Wall.

Tickets are available for £5 online or at the Museum Shop (booking fee applies online). We strongly advise booking tickets in advance as we cannot guarantee that tickets will be available on the day.

Complimentary tea and coffee will be available to enjoy during the talk. We recommend arriving before the start of the talk if you would like to grab a refreshment.

Copies of ‘100 Women of Oxford’ are available to purchase from the Museum of Oxford Shop. More information about Philippa and the project can be found on her website:

Sales from tickets help support our work to deliver fun and accessible family activities, community engagement projects, schools workshops, exhibitions and special events for Oxford’s people in our Museum spaces.
