What? This experimental making and drawing workshop provides an opportunity for participants to explore light and form with a focus on chiaroscuro and involving a series of exciting hands-on exercises. Working with simple paper engineering techniques, the morning session will involve using repetition of folds, bends and cuts to create a set of light-modulating sculptural forms. We will consider different shapes to use and the effects they offer. There will be an introduction to the 5 principles of chiaroscuro, including highlight, halftone, deep shadow, reflected light, and cast shadow and opportunities to consider how these might work in your creations..

The afternoon session will involve teamwork, as the group will work together to turn the sculptural forms into an installation, either floor based or suspended, then enhanced through dramatic lighting. We will explore some of the shading techniques used for effective chiaroscuro including hatching and shading with parallel lines, as participants draw from the installation or use a camera to capture a series of dramatic and exciting light and dark compositions.
