French pianist and composer Cécile Chaminade caused a sensation in her day. She enjoyed sell-out tours in Britain, and in North America 'Chaminade Clubs' popped up in her wake. When she died mid-twentieth century, her music had already fallen into obscurity. It is wonderful to have a pianist as distinguished as Sir Stephen Hough to bring her out of the shadows.
Along with Chaminade, Stephen Hough performs sonatas by Liszt and Chopin. Liszt composed only the one piano sonata, a dazzling and highly virtuosic work that lasts without a break for half an hour. Chopin composed three and this, his final one, sees him in total command.
