Discover how the Wittenham Clumps became one of Paul Nash's most inspirational and frequently-painted subjects.

The morning begins with an illustrated talk in St Agatha's Church, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, close to the Wittenham Clumps. A short drive (please use your own transport) takes us to the Clumps for a guided walk that explores Nash’s landscape, with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

September was the month when the Nash family visited the Wittenham Clumps on holidays before the First World War, so the landscape will look much as it did when discovered by Paul Nash and his artist brother, John.

The walk involves some climbing of hills but is not particularly strenuous. It will take place whatever the weather and is approximately 1.5 miles long. Feel free to bring cameras and binoculars as there are regular stops to look at places that were significant to Nash. No dogs please, as cattle often graze the landscape.
Parking: There are free, on-street places near St Agatha's Church in Brightwell- cum-Sotwell.

Christopher Baines runs the Paul Nash and the Wittenham Clumps website with artist Anna Dillon.
