MAM are a trio comprising vocal multi-instrumentalist Marilza Gouvêa, double bass and cellist Marcio Mattos and saxophonist Adrian Northover.

Music that clears [the] mind, because it goes back to the basics of what music is, the core of music. Breathtakingly beautiful, irresistibly funny and delightfully energetic. An absolute must for anyone with open ears.

The evening will also feature MAM performing with Oxfords finest improvising musicians!

Marilza Gouvêa comes from a musical family in Brazil, her father played classical guitar and her grandfather was a maestro and music teacher. From an early age she got involved with music: bossa nova and Brazilian popular music. Becoming involved in improvised music after coming to Europe, she has worked with many exponents of its artists such as Adrian Northover, Jim Dvorak, Terry Day, Phil Minton and Marcio Mattos. She has participated in various improvised music festivals such as the Acéfalo in Valparaíso, Chile and in Malaga, invited by Javier Carmona, the Casa Invisible festival. In Rio de Janeiro at the Audio Rebel festival. Her use of the voice as an expressive sound source is both dramatic and unique.

Marcio Mattos is a highly-solicited and well-known contributor to the international Improvised Music scene, having performed with Evan Parker, John Stevens, Roscoe Mitchell, Roswell Rudd and the Ballet Rambert Dance Company amongst many others. He was a long standing partner with the late Elton Dean and toured with the Bardo State Orchestra. Marcio Mattos is a much travelled and experienced improviser who can readily adapt and excel in every musical environment both in Double-Bass and Cello. His “success”, in this respect, is primarily due to the high level of commitment he makes in every situation faced. His presence can be heard in very many released CD’s and especially in his latest solo recordings, “SOL[os]” (EMANEM 5035). He is also a ceramics artist with a studio in Hackney.

Adrian Northover is based in London, and plays alto and soprano saxophone, and is also involved in sound production. He can currently be heard playing on the London club scene with a wide range of musicians, as well as doing solo saxophone performances.
He has made recordings with B Shops for the Poor, The Remote Viewers, Sonicphonics (with Billy Bang), The London Improvisers Orchestra, Ensemble Trip-Tik, Anna Homler,
John Edwards, The Custodians, and various duo CD’s with Adam Bohman,
Tasos Stamou, Daniel Thompson and many others. He has performed at many international festivals, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Sound Symposium, Victoriaville, Leipzig Jazz Festival, Tallin Festival, Arkangel Jazz, Freedom Of The City, Bari Jazz and others.

The Trio has recently performed in the ‘OSIMU’ festival in Italy, together with several Italian musicians.
