Venue, Timing and Cost

Venue:
Secret locations in Oxford
Date(s):
Saturday, 8 October 2022 to Sunday, 9 October 2022
Timing:
Sat 8th 3pm & 6pm, Sun 9th 3pm, 40mins long
Cost:
£5 per sphere

Let a sonic sphere nestle in your hands and take you on a journey to a secret location, guiding you by sound alone. Seemingly possessed of its own mind it guides you through familiar and unfamiliar terrain.

Can you keep the sphere ‘happy’ by going in the right direction? In return the sphere will lead you on a sonic voyage to the mysterious final destination where you will encounter a meeting of the spheres, a chiming, pulsing web of electronic sound.

How does it work?

Congregation takes place around the streets of Oxford, lasts approx. 40 mins and it involves a 20 minute walk on even terrain.

When you book your ticket, keep in mind that you are booking a sphere (ie 1 ticket = 1 sphere). If you book as part of a group, up to 4 people can share a sphere, or you can each book individually.

There are 5 starting points all within the city centre. That’s where Congregation starts from. After you book your ticket you will be allocated to one of the starting points and we will contact you via email and phone with the coordinates one week before the event.

If you want us to allocate you to the most accessible route, please tick the relevant box in the booking form.

Family friendly. Children of all ages welcome. Under 8s should not hold a sphere (but they can help navigate!)

Congregation is created by award-winning artist and composer Ray Lee, who’s brought some magnificent sound art experiences to Oxford over the past few years. You might still remember being mesmerised by the spinning tripods of Chorus in 2012 or being thrilled by the monumental installation Ring Out at the Clarendon Quad in 2017. In more intimate settings, the Ethometric Museum filled audiences’ thirst for wonder when it premiered at the History of Science Museum in 2011.

Congregation is presented in Oxford in partnership with SARU, the Sonic Art Research Unit at Oxford Brookes University. It was commissioned by Norwich and Norfolk Festival and Out There Festival Great Yarmouth with financial support from Without Walls, OCM, Oxford Brookes University and 101 Outdoor Arts, Newbury.
