Roderick Williams needs little introduction as one of the foremost baritones of today. He and long-standing duo partner Susie Allan perform Beethoven’s 'An die ferne Geliebte'. This cycle of six songs, one of the very first through-composed song cycles, setting the poet Alois Jeitteles, was the inspiration for many subsequent song composers. They also include settings of Goethe, Heine, Lenau and others by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, and by Josephine Lang, who was hugely admired by the Mendelssohns and Schumanns amongst others, and is increasingly recognised as a very significant Romantic song composer.
