This is the last of Mark Padmore’s performances as our 2022 Artist in Residence, before he leads the Mastercourse through the Festival’s second week. For this unmissable all-Schubert recital, he is joined by the distinguished Austrian pianist Till Fellner, who plays with ‘natural ease, eloquence and impeccable artistry’ (The Times). They focus on Schubert’s settings of Karl Gottfried von Leitner and Johann Gabriel Seidl, two poets encountered by the composer towards the end of his life and at the height of his powers. These settings date from 1826 until Schubert’s death in 1828 and although they are not grouped as cycles – and thus enter the concert hall less frequently than Winterreise or Schwanengesang – they are among the most profound and masterful of his great oeuvre.
