Expressing ourselves physically can have a profound positive effect on our mental health and wellbeing. In this session we look at the body in space, where we hold tension and how we can release that tension. This physical session consists of exercises and techniques that give the body the ability to feel free in space, which is calming for the body and keeps the body connected to the breath.

The session uses movement and postures from yoga and tai chi, and exercises adapted from the practices of Polish theatre director and theorist Jerzy Grotowski and other physical theatre practitioners.

Lauren Nicole Whitter is an actress, poet, physical theatre performer and lecturer based in Derby. Lauren studied drama at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is a published poet and delivers drama and clown workshops around the East Midlands to various community groups, such as the Enabled Centre and Nottingham Refugee Forum. In addition to being a freelance artist for Wollaton Hall’s Black Tudor project, she is an associate artist of 1623 Theatre Company and a Core Artist of Unlimited Theatre Company. Lauren is a freelance practitioner for the Nottingham Playhouse, Hubbub Theatre Company and Derby Theatre. She has received training from Trinity Laban Conservatoire Of Music And Dance, Gecko Theatre Company and Tmesis Theatre Company. She is keen to make the arts accessible and inclusive as possible. Her new theatre company – Anansi Theatre Company – looks at theatre, wellbeing and new stories. As a newly qualified yoga teacher, Lauren uses movement and yoga in her work and in her practice.
