We welcome back Gweneth Ann Rand and Simon Lepper, whose 2019 Festival performance of Messiaen’s Harawi was described in The Observer as ‘technically brilliant, verbally agile and expressive’ and was subsequently one of The Guardian’s Top Ten Classical Music Events of 2019. At the heart of their programme are the Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss. Written in 1948 when the composer was 84, and never heard by Strauss who died before the premiere, they are among his great achievements and have been a staple of the repertoire ever since. Also included in the programme are an early, romantic set of songs by Schoenberg, and songs by George Crumb and Florence Price.
