Pianist Charles Owen has been described by Gramophone Magazine as ‘one of the finest pianists of his generation’. His programme today includes Chopin’s Barcarolle, inspired by the songs of Venetian gondoliers, and selections from Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage (‘Years of Pilgrimage’) that were inspired by, in this case, Switzerland and the majesty of nature. He also plays Schumann’s Arabesque and Blumenstück, a pair of pieces the latter of which was offered to Clara Schumann as a wedding gift alongside the famous song cycle Myrthen. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s ever-popular ‘Moonlight’ sonata.
