She Performs: The Body is the latest exhibition in an ongoing investigation into the issues of inclusive feminist curating and the under representation of women artists in galleries and museums.

The exhibition will present paintings, installations, videos and performances focusing on the corporeal in particular, examining how the body can be a locus; often a tool, an object, a vehicle; sometimes a disappointment, but always a triumph.

Curated by Lynn Seraina Battaglia and Holly Daizy Broughton, She Performs is a movement of exhibitions, events, publications and online spaces that connects art with current issues surrounding feminism and gender relations. It seeks to create a space – both physical and virtual – for female artists and their audiences to come together to engage with and exchange idea.

Alongside the exhibition will be a programme of inclusive and accessible events that aim to bring artists and audiences together, foster engagement with the exhibition’s themes, and provide a safe space for reflection and open exchange of ideas. These include a curators talk, an evening of performance, a story party and a panel-led round table discussion. Facilitated by She Performs Curator of Interpretation, Nicola Waterman, the round table discussion – She Speaks – will be an opportunity to discuss the exhibition’s themes and the challenges (current and historical) of being a woman working in the art world and the wider creative industries.

Through the exhibition and events we will explore how the body - artist’s, female, human - is a site of both conflict and harmony. By showing women artists we are able to present an alternative narrative to that typically provided by museums and galleries.

Participating Artists: Ala Jazayeri, Anne Griffiths, Bex Massey, Catalina Renjifo, Fleur Simon, Jemima Hall, Naomi Morris.
