chemical landscapes
metroncollaborative, artists Diane Jones-Parry and Annabel Ralphs, will use the gallery space as a laboratory in which they will allow the nature and behaviour of the minerals and materials they are working with to change over time, determined by the conditions offered by the site. As in two earlier residencies at MAS, every iteration is different and they seek relative rather than absolute outcomes.
Looking specifically at the way in which China clay (kaolin) shapes the geological landscape, before and after the chemical processes that transform it for industrial and commercial use, they uncovered a complex and interconnected web of social, historical and geographical relationships.
It has been achieved through dialogue and collaboration with institutions during the development of this ongoing project, including:
Holliday Pigments, Ultramarine Factory, Hull,
Imerys Minerals Ltd, Par, Cornwall, Wheal Martyn Museum, Carthew, St Austell, Cornwall.
Brickfield at Blackpool Pit, Trewoon, Cornwall.
