How do artists change our view of the world? This fascinating panel discussion considers how artists and galleries create and present work that disrupts our prevailing interpretations of everyday reality.

Speakers include artists Adel Abdessemed and Zineb Sediraand and the event will be chaired by Paul Hobson, Director of Modern Art Oxford

Adel Abdessemed

Adel Abdessemed is a prominent figure of the international art scene. From drawing to video, from sculpture to installation, Abdessemed probes in the wounds of our present. His work has been the subject, during the last thirty years, of numerous major solo exhibitions, at MoMA PS1 in New York, MIT List Art Center in Cambridge (Massachusetts), at the Magasin — Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Grenoble, at Parasol Unit in London, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, at the Musée national d’Art Moderne — Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris for a retrospective, «Adel Abdessemed. Je suis Innocent» (2012), at the CAC in Málaga, or at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. Two major monographic exhibitions take place in 2018: Otchi Tchiornie at the Musée du Grand-Hornu in Belgium, and L’Antidote at the MAC Lyon.

Zineb Sedira

Preserving and transmitting memories of the past in order to leave a legacy for the future has often been at the core of Zineb Sedira’s work and, over the fifteen years, she has enriched the debate around the concepts of modernism, modernity and its manifestations in an inclusive way. Sedira has also addressed environmental and geographical issues. Using portraits, landscapes, language and archival research, she has developed a polyphonic vocabulary, spanning fiction, documentary and more poetic and lyrical approaches. Sedira has worked in installation, photography, film, video and she has recently returned to object-making.
