Venue, Timing and Cost
For the artist Paul Nash, Oxfordshire's wooded hills, the Wittenham Clumps, were a major source of inspiration. Nash, who was an official war artist in both World Wars, discovered the Wittenham Clumps as a young man and became captivated by their beauty and mystery. He painted them more times than any other landscape. Christopher Baines will lead a walk around the Wittenham Clumps, exploring Nash's enduring fascination with this landscape and the places where he worked.
The event will begin with an illustrated talk in the modern extension of St Agatha's Church, Brightwell cum Sotwell, OX10 0RU, followed by a walk that takes in both hills of the Clumps and spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. September was the month that the Nash family visited the Wittenham Clumps on holidays before the First World War, so the area will look much as it did when it was discovered by Paul Nash and his artist brother, John.
Christopher Baines runs the Paul Nash & Wittenham Clumps website with artist Anna Dillon. He has given talks about Paul Nash at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and has been interviewed about Nash for the BBC television programmes ‘Paul Nash: The Ghosts of War’ and ‘Countryfile’.
