Hugo Wolf’s 46 settings of Italian poetry, translated by Paul Heyse, are among the most perfect gems of the song repertoire, by turn humorous, bitter and tender. Heard as a single songbook, they allow a remarkable dialogue to emerge between the two singers, who inhabit an array of characters.
