Richard Strauss’s uplifting Violin Sonata in E flat, Op.18, was written in 1887–8, the early years of his romance with his future wife, Pauline. It is coupled with Beethoven’s equally sunny 'Spring' Sonata, played here by prize-winning violinist Sophie Rosa.
