Sheku Kanneh-Mason holds the title BBC Young Musician 2016, having won it with an inspirational performance of Shostakovich Cello Concerto No 1. An exclusive Decca recording contract followed and, through an anonymous sponsor, Sheku has been given on permanent loan, the 1610 Brothers Amati cello that he played for the BBC competition.

From a musical family of 7 siblings – his elder sister Isata, a student of piano at the Royal Academy, accompanies him tonight – Sheku began studying the cello at 6 years old. He now combines academic studies with a busy concert schedule of recitals, chamber music and appearances with Chineke! Orchestra including a performance of Haydn Cello Concerto at The Royal Festival Hall in September 2016.
