Winning the Gold Medal in the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition, Moscow, brought Irish pianist Barry Douglas to the attention of the world and set him on a flourishing international career. 2016/7 sees him performing season opening concertos with the St Petersburg Academic Philharmonia and Ulster Orchestra, appearing with London Symphony Orchestra under Valery Gergiev and in recital across Europe and the USA.
His programme for SJE is a tour de force: Brahms’ demanding 'Variations on a Theme by Paganini' and Mussorgsky’s captivating walk around a gallery: 'Pictures at an Exhibition'.
