Concert IV.
Franz Schubert
Sonata in a, D 784
Sonata in E flat, D 568
Sonata in D, D 850

In the summer of 1823, after the first manifestation of his venereal disease, Schubert wrote the poem Mein Gebet, in which he expressed a longing for the comfort of death; the first songs of Die Schöne Mullerin and the A Minor Sonata reflect his troubled mind. Two years later, he travelled to Gastein and Salzburg– the summer of the ‘Great’ C major Symphony and the extrovert Sonata in D. The Sonata in E flat is a version of the Sonata in D flat, D 567 that Schubert is thought to have revisited during 1825/26.
