A new musical written by Oxford local Alex Thomas is heading for the stage this December. In what promises to be one of the most memorable theatre experiences of the year, audiences will be transported back to December 1916, join the Vebronsky family exactly one hundred years later to see the Russian Revolution through the eyes of one family.

The production, featuring an original score run is on at Big School, Magdalen College School from Thursday 1st December 2016 to Saturday 3rd December 2016.

1917 is the story of the Vebronsky family during the tumultuous year of two revolutions. The plot is based on the all-too-real experiences of many aristocratic families during that fateful year, which saw their opulent dream-world replaced with the stark reality of modernity. Against this epic historical backdrop the Vebronskys argue, laugh and love like any other family. Inspired by the incredible stories which emerged from the revolution, 1917 is a celebration of humanity’s ability to survive. The ambitious score attempts to capture Russia’s rich musical heritage, with sweeping orchestral melodies alongside exuberant folk dances and avant-garde jazz. The show is packed with exciting dance routines, and promises to provide a memorable experience for all the family.

‘There is no distinction now between the theatre and life: they are one and the same.’
