Beginners are always welcome in this friendly class.

This is a structured courses to introduce a range of drawing techniques and materials to new students and enable those who are more experienced to develop their skills further. Students will be encouraged to draw from life/3D (although 2D images will be available for reference and use). The course will be studio based.

Students will have the opportunity to explore their own ideas and experiment, enabling them to find their own style. The emphasis is on experimenting and discovering different ways and approaches to drawing a wide range of subject matter. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere will be encouraged so that learners feel comfortable to participate and ask questions.

Reference to the work of other artists (from the past and present) will also be included, as well as information about any relevant exhibitions.

The course plan can be adapted to suit students’ interests, abilities and requirements. Students will be encouraged to do each week’s project with the option for individual students to negotiate alternative projects.

Portfolio advice and professional practice advice is available to students.

Skills/techniques Covered
By the end of the workshop students will be able to:
•Apply a range of drawing techniques and skills.
•Use a wide range of materials.
•Closely observe details.
•Experiment, analyse and think independently
•Problem solve when transcribing 3D to 2D
•Look at and reflect on the work of artists, including contemporary artists, and materials.
•Produce a portfolio of work, including sketches and drawings

Level
Suitable for all abilities from beginners to the more experienced. No experience necessary.

Materials
The Mill has some art materials to try out before buying and provides paper. Students are encouraged to buy their own sketchbook and basic drawing materials as the course progresses.

Please bring with you:
•Apron or overall; please wear suitable clothing.
•A sketchbook
•Pencils e.g. HB, 2B, 6B and pen, willow charcoal, eraser and putty rubber, pencil sharpener.
•As the course progresses the tutor can advise on any other materials e.g. ink, pastels, pencil crayons…
•Material costs are kept as low as possible so please do not let this deter you.

Tutor Profile
Ruth Broadbent is an artist who teaches drawing and sculpture in universities, colleges and art centres, and has a PGCE in post-compulsory education. Drawing underpins her art practice and research. She is a member of the Drawing Edges research group and regularly exhibits her work-images can be seen at www.ruthbroadbent.com

Payment is required when booking. We regret that tickets may not be exchanged or refunded after purchase, except when an event is cancelled. For missed classes through tutor absence we will endevour to schedule catch up sessions where possible. Partial refunds or credits will not be given.

Disabled Access
Regrettably, due to the historic nature of the building, not all classes are accessible by wheelchair. Please contact the box office should you have particular access requirements.
