Suitable for beginners and / or those with some experience, the course will cover a range of approaches to fine line and tonal engraving on end-grain boxwood and lemonwood, as well as inking, printing and hand burnishing (on Japanese and European papers) and printing on an Albion relief press. Participants should bring sketches and / or photographs that couldbe used as the basis for creating small-scale black and white engraved images. The course will also include an introduction to the rich potential of creative collage using wood engraved prints; it also forms a basis for those wishing to join Oxford Printmakers as future members.

Anne Desmet RA RE specializes in wood engraving, linocut and mixed-media collage of architectural subjects from London to Rome. She exhibits widely, has won some 30 national and international awards, has works in public and private collections worldwide and commissions include engravings for the British Museum, British Library, V&A and Sotheby’s. Her first retrospective: Anne Desmet – Towers and Transformations opened at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, in 1998. Her second museum exhibition: Anne Desmet – Urban Evolution opened at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, in 2008.
Both exhibitions each toured other UK museums for two years.
Desmet is author of Primary Prints (2010); co-author, with Jim Anderson, of Handmade Prints (2000); and co-editor, with Anthony Dyson, of Printmakers: The Directory (2006), all published by A&C Black. She was also editor of Printmaking Today magazine from 1998-2013.
