Salary / Fee:

The Oxford University Museum of Natural History (OUMNH) is looking to engage an artist to plan and facilitate one or two one-day interactive workshop(s) with a group of six young people aged between 16-18, based on the 'Our World from Space' project.

The artist will help the group to experiment with using art to communicate scientific ideas and support them in considering how art can help science to become more accessible and engaging. The aim of the workshop(s) is to inspire the young people to create a playful activity for families that will form part of the museum’s public Family Programme in the autumn. The workshop(s) could take any format and use any medium which can be used safely in the museum space (the OUMNH stonework is vulnerable to damage, so certain materials cannot be used in the museum’s main building to protect and conserve the architecture).

The successful artist will have experience of working creatively with young people in an education, museum, youth or community setting.

About the participants:

The young people who will be participating in the workshop will be on a three-week placement (5th- 23rd August) with the museum as part of the 'Natural Science and Heritage Scheme'; a targeted youth programme which provides local young people from diverse backgrounds with the opportunity to find out about the museum and its Public Engagement activities. More about the 'Natural Science and Heritage Scheme' can be found here: https://oumnh.ox.ac.uk/natural-science-a...

About the 'Our World from Space' Project:

This year, the Museum of Natural History is one of 22 museums and science centres taking part in a national project called 'Our World from Space', funded by the UK Space Agency and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and coordinated by the Association for Science & Discovery Centres (ASDC). This project explores the relevance of UK space science for the future health and sustainability of our home planet with the vision to inspire and empower a society that embraces the value and relevance of space science for everyday life and the sustainable future of our planet. The Museum plans to engage family audiences with this topic and create more awareness of the role of space technology in supporting nature and the environment. More information about the project can be found here: https://www.sciencecentres.org.uk/projec...

Artist fee: £300 per full workshop day (this includes planning and delivery).

The museum has a budget to cover the cost of workshop materials.

Deadline to apply: 28th May
