Carbon Literacy Training for Artists & Activists

Learn the most impactful ways to tackle climate change and work together to create a cultural shift through art and culture.

Event dates: Wednesday 14th June, 5.30pm - 7.30pm & Wednesday 28th June, 5.30pm - 7.30pm. Please attend both sessions.

Green Arts Oxfordshire Network has developed a Carbon Literacy Training course for Oxfordshire’s cultural community, certified by the internationally recognised Carbon Literacy Project. To celebrate, GAON is offering Oxfordshire’s artists, activists, musicians, theatre professionals, performers, writers and creative freelancers of all kinds a one-time introductory offer of £10 for a space in the first cohort, limited to 15 people.

This 3-part online Carbon Literacy Course will give you a contextual understanding of what climate change is, the scale of its effects, the most impactful ways to reduce carbon emissions in our sector and what we can do as cultural leaders locally, nationally and globally to work towards net-zero and climate justice.

Carbon Literacy is “An awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

The sustainability consultancy firm Jacobs did a study on the effectiveness of Carbon Literacy training, and discovered there is between a 5 and 15% carbon saving per person for those that undertake the training.

You will be certified as Carbon Literate by making an individual pledge and a community pledge of what you can do within your power to make a significant difference to your carbon impact.

Who is this three-part Course aimed at?

This course is designed for Oxfordshire’s arts and cultural sector, for individual creative practitioners as well as staff and volunteers of museums, galleries, theaters, arts centres, festivals, cinemas and other types of cultural organisations and community groups.

This first cohort is specifically for creative practitioners and activists, with a one-time introductory offer of £10. The course has a value of at least £60 per person. If you cannot afford the £10 asked, £5 bookings are available, as well as an option to support us in subsidising these spaces by paying £15.

We ask that you join the Green Arts Oxfordshire Network if you are not a member already. You can sign up for free here: https://www.greenartsox.co.uk/sign-the-c...

The Zoom sessions are participatory, including joint working exercises and discussion.

3 hours of self-directed e-learning that must be completed before the Zoom sessions.
Session Part A (via Zoom), Wednesday 14th June, 5.30pm - 7.30pm
Session Part B (via Zoom), Wednesday 28th June, 5.30pm - 7.30pm
A ‘Participant Details’ form including 2 action pledges, which will be sent to The Carbon Literacy Project to certify you as Carbon Literate. You will have 1 week after completing Session Part B to send us your form.
By booking a space on this course, you are committing to 7 hours of learning, split over the e-learning platform and 2 Zoom sessions. Please plan to complete the e-learning in advance and attend all sessions. You must complete all sections of the course to be certified as Carbon Literate.
