Venue, Timing and Cost
Join us for a fun filled day of activities to celebrate St Catherine's Day on 25 November, the patron saint of spinners, lacemakers and spinsters. On this traditional lacemaker's holiday, see lace being made by local lacemakers and have a go at making some yourself. Oxford historian and lace expert David Hopkin will be on hand to talk about lacemaking customs and traditions. Take a closer look at lacemaking paraphernalia including a 'dick pot' used to keep lacemakers warm, beautifully crafted lace bobbins engraved with messages to loved ones and modern day painted bobbins. The speciality of the day, Cattern cakes, spiced with cinnamon, lightly fruited and flavoured with caraway seeds will be on offer to taste.
