Nettlebed Classical Studio is a relaxing and friendly creative space in which you can gain new skills in classical oil painting techniques.

Maybe you are a complete beginner with an admiration for classical art? Are you already on your artist path and would like to learn more about classical painting methods and materials that were once used by the great masters to add to your toolbox? Maybe you would like to take up a new creative hobby, learn a new skill and connect with like-minded people?

In this practical course, you will be guided step-by-step as we learn how to create a traditional oil painting using the same process as the old art masters such as Rembrandt and Caravaggio

What you will learn-

We begin our journey by preparing the canvas and creating an underpainting. During this, we will be focusing on building up lights, middle tones and the shadows in-between layers of glaze. This is a key part of this painting technique, where you have an interplay of light and dark in the subject matter. In Italy, this term is called chiaroscuro, (chiaro, “light,” and scuro, “dark”) finding the light from out of the darkness in other words!
We follow this by adding colour to our painting and learning how to make oil paint from traditional pigments layers in-between a special glaze.

By the end of the five session course, you will have learnt how to create an underpainting, make oil paint from pigment in a finished painting to take home.
Subject themes vary from classical portraits to animals and landscapes.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to have a chat about the courses or a demonstration.
