Venue, Timing and Cost

SOFO Museum is hosting three workshops inspired by Paul Joyce's approach to painting social memories of the Second World War, currently on display at the museum. We will look at a different aspect of his themes and inspiration in each workshop. Participants will have guidance on selecting from a range of images or can bring their own to create a highly colorized version of a black and white photograph of a scene.
We will work within the same constraints as Paul Joyce in painting landscape, vehicles or buildings, without people.
1 - Saturday 25 October 2025. Theme: From the Air. Landscape, fields of Oxfordshire.
2 - Saturday 1 November 2025. Theme: About Machines: Cowley Works, factories, wreckage or grounded planes.
3 - Saturday 8 November 2025. Theme: In the Streets: Houses, buildings, partly fallen, partly standing proud.
Each one will look at relevant Paul Joyce paintings and his sources and inspiration.
Tutor: Local artist Anita Joice. Anita recently led the Soldiers of Oxfordshire's workshop programme based on a creative responses to the Holocaust to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen
“I truly enjoyed the programme you organised in relation to Naomi and Arthur's story. It has been incredibly moving, inspirational, and creatively stimulating […] from discussions […] to looking at various artworks and the movement exercises.
It really touched me profoundly, and I not only learnt a lot about the war, survival, camp liberation process and its impact on soldiers but also about myself.” - Life Lines participant, Ania Ready, 2025
Costs £70.00 per day, includes all materials.
All Dates: Saturday 25 October, Saturday 1 November and Saturday 8 November 2025
