Sally Beamish began her professional career as a viola player before choosing to focus on composition when she moved to Scotland in 1990. With her own playing background clearly informing Sally’s characteristically precise and impactful writing for instruments, her work has been broadcast and performed extensively around the world by soloists of the calibre of Hokan Hardenberger, Branford Marsalis, Tabea Zimmermann and Dame Evelyn Glennie. Ensemble Isis’s programme explores the many influences on her work including jazz in her alto saxophone piece ‘April’, and also surveys her most early and recent works for ensemble.
