Imogen Rigden’s show Impermanence takes its title from the ancient Japanese calendar The 72 Microseasons of Impermanence that records small changes in the natural environment across the year. This solo show contains several elements.

Colourful abstract paintings are each based on one micro-season lasting five days. These all contain a line of colour, an expression of the artist’s emotional response to that time. Sculptural pieces, some woven from natural materials from beach, garden or woodland, echo the shapes and movement to be found in these paintings. The textile piece Our Front Garden at Number 54 is a snapshot of the mainly wild plants growing there over one week in late summer. A photo installation, H20 & Co., The Company of Water recognises the changeable nature of water with its many colours and moods. The Look Outside project continues from Imogen’s solo show, Wilderness Bewilderness, with new contributions from across the globe: a record of human appreciation, doubt and optimism. This collaboratively produced calendar records natural events from February 2023 to February 2024.

In this body of work made over the last two years Imogen continues to highlight ordinary, overlooked and transient events in nature.
