Instruments of Time and Truth
Mark Jordan (conductor)
Sunday 2 July 2023 at 6.00 p.m in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford
Joining forces with Instruments of Time and Truth, Oxford’s professional period ensemble, Oxford Pro Musica Singers present Handel’s sparkling early work Dixit Dominus in the fitting grandeur of the famous Sheldonian Theatre. Scored for choir, soloists, strings and continuo, it is a setting of Psalm 110, considered one of the ‘royal psalms’ and so surely an ideal piece for this coronation year.
To complement the Handel, the choir will perform Vivaldi’s joyful and much-loved Gloria, Mozart's sublime late masterpiece Ave Verum Corpus and Buxtehude's elegant cantata Der Herr ist mit mir, a setting of words from Psalm 118 - ‘The Lord is on my side; I will not fear’ – which concludes with a particularly fine dance-like Alleluia. This is a programme of baroque and classical delights to relish!
Programme:
George Frideric Handel - Dixit Dominus HWV 232
Antonio Vivaldi - Gloria in D RV 589
Dietrich Buxtehude - Der Herr ist mit mir BuxWV 15
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Ave verum corpus K 618
