Venue, Timing and Cost
Following the funeral of his father, Arthur returns to art school filled with expectations of a sympathetic reception, and with a plan to patch things up with ex Ava. Instead, he discovers his classmate, Will, has undergone a similar situation; his father and stepmother have recently drowned. In the short time since, Will has been artistically prolific, and his new-found attention extends to Ava, who is dating him. With his plans foiled, Arthur reacts, beginning a perverse, covert contest of performance, spectacle and artistic expressions of grief.
Examining the sensation of having a tragedy ‘usurped’, Mitigating Circumstances is a tragicomedy that turns on an aesthetic overload of visual art, song and public intervention.
