Sculptural knitting techniques at art-sauce

This exciting new course will help you to learn a variety of sculptural knitting techniques for artists. These will include learning to cast-on, cast-off, knit, purl, increase, decrease, knit in the round on circular needles as well as short row shaping.

Essentially these skills will give you the skills to knit socks after the course but they are also fundamental skills that will allow you to incorporate them into sculptural art practice too.
There are so many contemporary artists that have created exciting work using knitting and crocheting to explore a wide range of themes. Knitting and crocheting can be boundary-pushing and politically charged and is no longer considered a dowdy domestic hobby.

Each week you will learn new techniques to take away and practice as well as discussing the work of different contemporary artists that use knitting within their fine art practice.

Take a look at these artists to get started:

Ben Cuevas
Olek
Ernesto Neto
Lorna Hamilton Brown
Each participant will be provided with circular 4mm needles and a ball of DK yarn.

NB: You will be producing swatches during this class rather than a knitted object. These swatches can be used to build visual references for future work.
