What a Liberty! Memorable Moments along Oxford’s Ancient Boundaries

Join us for a a talk about some of the more dramatic and amusing incidents from five centuries of the ceremonial circuits of the city’s boundaries (or liberty) by Oxford’s mayors. Mainly following its rivers – the Thames, its sidestreams and the Cherwell – the event had an important civic purpose, yet was punctuated by stops at public houses, leading often to the ‘irresponsible jollity’ of ‘an irregular steeple-chase around the entire environs of Oxford’.

Sales from tickets helps support our work to deliver fun and accessible family activities, community engagement projects, us to buy materials for school sessions, exhibitions and special events for Oxford’s people, in our brand new spaces.

Feel free to bring your lunch, or a coffee from the Town Hall café.
