Maconchy String Quartet No. 3 (1938)
Philip Herbert - Solicitudo (2020)
Beethoven String Quartet No. 15 in A minor op. 132

The Villiers Quartet is a featured artist of the JdP. We are thrilled to welcome the quartet back for the first of five concerts exploring the five late Beethoven quartets, a series held in association with the Department of Continuing Education and the Oxford Mathematics Institute. Beethoven’s five-movement A minor quartet op. 132 is best known for its sublime Heiliger Dankgesang movement and for a finale that became a source of inspiration for T. S. Eliot. The concert also includes the dramatic and intense third quartet by Elizabeth Maconchy, elected honorary fellow at St Hilda’s College in 1978.

6.45pm: pre-concert talk by Dr Peter Copley
