Why do some objects foster feelings of nostalgia and emotionally link us to our past? Do inherited objects embody meaning and knowledge that can be passed on from generation to generation? Can the home be considered an object that is 'used' to express a Black identity and belonging?

Coinciding with the overarching themes of memory, motherhood and domesticity within the exhibition. 'Some of Us Are Brave', moderator Junie James, renowned for creating the Caribbean Living Room installation in Oxford, will delve into the relationship between material culture (wallpaper, doilies, photographs and figurines) and the home space.

Sharing her experiences with Hall and Davies, James will elicit how these 'traditional' memory objects have shaped both artists individual and collective experiences.

In celebration of African Caribbean heritage, the conversation will examine how objects, mementoes and memorabilia can be viewed as symbols of a feminine aesthetic, cultural pride and self-expression.

The panel discussion will explore how art intersects personal associations of experience and memories, illustrating how art can enable objects to escape the boundaries of being inanimate, and become imbued with personal memories thayt redefine our understanding of the transient versus the permanent. The concepts behind the panel discussion will be contextualised through the artworks on display in Some of Us Are Brave, with the artists deconstructing their work from this perspective.
