We're very excited to announce that our first exhibition as a collective since we came together in 2020 will be FRACTURE!

Portable Collective at OFS

Emerging from a year or more of lockdowns and limitations on all sorts of personal, social and creative activity, we find ourselves in the fractured, unstable landscape of the “New Normal”. FRACTURE! is an exhibition of work by PORTABLE Collective which explores both the disorientation and the opportunities of this new landscape. The outcomes are varied, ranging from personal and psychological responses, to explorations into how this changed space offers new ways of experiencing our lived environment. Change and instability can be dis-orientating and alarming, especially when forced upon us by an unforeseeable global pandemic. But are they always negative? In recognising our innate adaptability, the work in this exhibition seeks to walk the paths between the disruption of a world broken from its past and the opportunity which this fracture offers to re-build and move forward.

The Portable Collective is a group of seven Oxford-based UK artists formed in 2019 here at The Old Fire Station, and nurtured through the long lockdown months of 2020. We explore notions of agility, transience, fragility and impermanence in the modern, mobile world, especially in a post-pandemic context.
FRACTURE! Is our debut exhibition as a collective. The practice of the collective is diverse, extending to include painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, moving-image, interventions, and performance. What unites and inspires us is a willingness to explore and present all facets of an idea, question or theme in a way that does not seek to impose answers but to foster mutual support, discussion and collaboration in both our own work and in the wider context. We will embark upon public exhibitions to explore this nexus of ideas further, as a way of signalling a fresh start for ourselves and perhaps more widely. We relish the possibilities associated with responding to new, unfamiliar or non-traditional “art spaces”, and the questions, stories and feelings which this transient approach can conjure up. We will be seeking a series of opportunities, part planned and part improvised, to explore ways of being both within and beyond the gallery space and the traditional expectations it can carry, to explore what art should be and where it should be experienced; as well as embracing that sense of mutability in a spirit of optimism and adventure.

19 January to 22 February 2022 at Oxford's wonderful Arts at The Old Fire Station, 40 George St, Oxford.
