The 20th Oxford Lieder Festival draws to a close with music by Schubert and Vaughan Williams performed by renowned baritone Christopher Maltman and the fast-rising pianist-conductor Audrey Saint-Gil. In his Songs of Travel, Vaughan Williams sets the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson in a cycle that has echoes of Schubert and the archetypal romantic wanderer, yet is quintessentially English and a profoundly influential work of the early 20th century. Following this, we conclude with Schubert’s settings of Heine – six extraordinary songs from the last year of his life – and the very last song he wrote, ‘Die Taubenpost’.
