Sylvie is a Fellow of both the Society of Scribes and Illuminators and the Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society. She has been teaching calligraphy for almost 30 years and is currently a tutor on the SSI’s Calligraphy Correspondence Course and Advanced Training Scheme. Her interests lie in the use of formal scripts and include designing family trees, maps, cut work, Hebrew lettering and exploring new structures.

After a brief historical introduction we will look closely at Harley 2904, the manuscript in the British Library collection which is used as the starting point of the Foundational Hand. The underlying forms will be considered and we will then begin writing.

Please bring a short quote which you would like to use for a finished piece. We will talk about the layout of your text during the afternoon and go some way towards completing a piece of work.
