Camino del Flamenco have been running Flamenco dance classes in Oxfordshire since 2003, but this is the first time we have run a Flamenco guitar course in Oxford. Following this short, 2 week course, we plan to run regular weekly Flamenco guitar classes in Oxford and this course is designed as an introduction to the classes.

This course is suitable for guitarists looking for a challenge or to broaden their horizons.

During the course the teacher will demonstrate the basic techniques needed to play flamenco guitar, razguedo, arpeggio, picado etc. The students will be practice in small groups and exercises that will help to improve these techniques together. You will also learn the chord shapes and some of the theory behind flamenco concentrating on the altered Phrygian mode.

During this course you will be introduced to the different palos (styles of song) used in flamenco with the emphasis on the rhythms necessary for accompanying dancers. The first hour of this course will be a small group lesson with the tutor and the second hour will be accompanying a Camino del Flamenco dance class, under close instruction from the tutor.

The tutor for this course is Matt Sullivan, who has been the head guitarist for Camino del Flamenco since 2004. He currently teaches Flamenco guitar at 3 arts centres in the UK, as well as tutoring intensive short courses for numerous music events and festivals. He has been teaching in the UK and Spain for over 15 years and in that time has performed many times with Camino del Flamenco and also with his own Flamenco fusion group.

In order to take part in this course students must have a reasonable ability to play guitar. This means an ability to play open chords with confidence and a scale or 2 is advised. An ability to read a chord chart would be of benefit though not essential as all chords will be demonstrated. Sight reading is not necessary but some transcriptions could be made available if requested. Notes for all the sessions will be available weekly.

You will need a flamenco or classical guitar. A capo and a footstool would be useful though not essential. The tutor is happy for students to record or film any demonstrations for further personal study.

Please note we can only offer a maximum of 6 places on this course. If you are interested in further details or in booking a place please contact Camino del Flamenco.
