Bridge: Pensiero and Allegro appassionato

York Bowen: Viola Sonata no.1 in C minor, Op.18

In 2016, 20-year old Timothy Ridout was awarded first prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, the first British winner in the contest’s thirty-six year history. This prestigious victory was to launch his international career. Last season he appeared as soloist with Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Philharmonia Orchestra and Young Musicians European Orchestra, made his debut in Musashino Hall, Tokyo and performed George Benjamin’s Viola, Viola at the Southbank Centre on the invitation of Tabea Zimmermann.

Timothy’s accompanist is the gifted young German pianist Frank Dupree, who last year made his UK debut performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no.3 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

The programme for this SJE Arts tea-time concert is 20th century and British. Frank Bridge and Benjamin Britten were themselves both viola players, and the pianist York Bowen was a regular accompanist of legendary violist, Lionel Tertis.

Timothy plays on a viola by Peregerino di Zanetto c.1565-75 generously on a temporary loan from Beares International Violin Society.
