We have an unusual exhibition this October in that few sculptors working in wood have sculpture that will survive outdoors. Some of the glorious features of wood cannot be enjoyed outside without a risk of deterioration but Rolf Hook's connection with wood is indefatigable and he uses hard woods such as ancient oak, yew and sweet chestnut from trees that will endure the elements. He works with trees that have fallen naturally and explores the aesthetics of shape, form, texture and colour so that his work reflects nature’s innermost beauty.

Some of his sculptures are called 'Airport' with rustic, featherlike carving to evoke wings. They collect rainwater and become natural birdbaths - something that the robin and his friends who really own the Turrill Garden will enjoy.

His new direction of portrait heads are intriguing responses to wood he has found, with a calm beauty of their own and these smaller works reflect the quiet tranquility of our local garden to perfection.
