The Festival draws to a close with a performance of Schumann’s Myrthen, the great song cycle that he gave to his wife Clara as a wedding gift in 1840. Reflecting Schumann’s wide literary interests, this amazing cycle includes poetry by writers from Burns, Byron and Moore to Goethe, Heine and Rückert. Oxford Lieder’s Artistic Director, Sholto Kynoch, is joined by Tara Erraught, already established as one of the most exciting singers of her generation, and BBC New Generation Artist Ashley Riches. Their programme also includes folksongs and works by Maurice Ravel and Dmitri Shostakovich, with the poetry of Robert Burns as a common thread. A perfect way to bring our celebration of European song to a close.
