These evening events will take place between April 2018 and April 2019, 7:30-9:00pm.

Sound I’m Particular is a Pay What You Decide talk series that aims to provide a forum to discuss and interrogate listening as both subject and object, exploring the various guises of contemporary listening practices with talks and demonstrations by artists and academics from all over the country; ranging from topics such as augury and Nan Shepherd, to Gertrude Stein and Virginia Woolf, to field recording and Twin Peaks.

All are welcome and no previous knowledge of the subjects is necessary.

Curated by Patrick Farmer and Harriet Butler.

Tess Denman-Cleaver: Meetings of the Air

For our next Sound I’m Particular talk, saru artist-in-residence, Tess Denman-Cleaver, will share extracts of performance works that explore relationships between language, landscape, sound and technology.

Tess’ background in theatre informs her performance practice, which spans performance writing, installation, live event and public workshops.

In this performance/talk Tess will present and discuss elements of new work that she is developing as artist in residence at SARU. This new work looks at the writings of Gertrude Stein and early examples of participatory radio broadcasting, and uses live radio broadcasting to build listening and writing environments through which Tess makes the live events.

Tess’ recent work has been presented at Hatton Gallery (Newcastle), Tyneside Cinema (Newcastle), Workplace Gallery with Women Artist of the North East Library (Gateshead), Tate St Ives, Wilkinson Gallery (London) and Turner Contemporary (Margate).

Tess is currently working with sound artist Tim Shaw to create new work commissioned by English Heritage, and is making a performance for Middlesborough Art Weekender 2018 as artist in residence at Middlesbrough Town Hall. She has a PhD in performance philosophy and landscape.
